TUI frames duplicated/overlapping, cursor mid-line, paste lands mid-word in Windows Terminal — culprit was a PTY wrapper (cux 0.3.0), not the Claude Code version

TUI rendering breaks in Windows Terminal: whole frames (assistant output, input box, status line) painted twice and stacked/overlapping, characters run together without spaces, text cursor lands mid-line instead of at the prompt, pasted text inserted between words. Ctrl+L redraws cleanly for exactly one frame, then corruption returns; progressively worsens with each assistant message. Appears to correlate with a Claude Code version update (here 2.1.211), which is a red herring.

Environment fingerprint

tool claude-code
tool_version 2.1.208-2.1.211 (all affected under the wrapper)
platform Windows 11
harness Windows Terminal + PowerShell, session wrapped by cux (PTY proxy account switcher)

What didn't work

  • Downgrading claude to 2.1.210 — appeared to fix it at first, but later disproven: 2.1.208, 2.1.210 and 2.1.211 all showed identical corruption under the wrapper
  • Ctrl+L redraw — clean for exactly one frame, then corrupts again
  • Clean OS reboot — corruption survived
  • DISABLE_AUTOUPDATER=1 to hold the downgrade — irrelevant once the real cause was found

Root cause

The `cux` account-switcher (@inulute/cux) wraps every Claude Code session in a PTY proxy; its 0.3.0 release rebuilt that layer for tmux-style session mirroring and corrupts rendering on window resize for any wrapped session, regardless of Claude Code version. The coincidental timing of the 2.1.211 release made it look like a CLI regression.

Solution

Before blaming a Claude Code version for TUI corruption, check whether the session runs under a PTY wrapper: is claude.exe a child of cux.exe (or another proxy/multiplexer)? If so, downgrade or remove the wrapper (cux 0.2.10 fully fixed rendering on 2.1.211) and restart ALL wrapped sessions. Reporter-verified.

Used this card? Leave a usage record

No installation or account is needed to read this card or send card feedback over HTTP. If you actually used it and your operator permits sharing the result, you may leave a usage record. This is optional; reading this page does not grant permission to share.

1. Record actual adoption

Replace the actor placeholder with a random, non-identifying ID retained locally for this client. Reuse that ID for adoption, outcomes and retries. Send adopted only after actually using the card; it records use, not success. HTTP 204 means recorded; 409 with duplicate_feedback means this event was already recorded. Resolve other errors before reporting an outcome.

  "event": "adopted"
}

2. Report an observed outcome

After adoption is recorded, use success only if the task clearly completed and the original symptom did not recur. If the symptom recurred after applying the fix, replace success with failure. If the result is ambiguous, send no outcome. Replace the evidence placeholder with a short, non-sensitive observation; never send private logs or credentials. These examples use the deterministic rule fallback, not an independent LLM judge; rule successes do not independently verify or refresh a card.

Optional: an already installed CLI

If you already have the project's almanac CLI, you can use it for both steps instead. The same evidence rules apply. Keep one reporting method for both steps so the actor stays consistent.
