# aider + OpenRouter: "litellm.APIConnectionError: OpenrouterException - 'choices'" hides OpenRouter's real error (key credit limit / 402, free-model daily 429, upstream overload); older aider shows a blank reply with "0 received" instead

## Symptom

litellm.APIConnectionError: APIConnectionError: OpenrouterException - 'choices'
Retrying in 0.2 seconds...

Every request to an `openrouter/...` model (often openrouter/anthropic/claude-3.7-sonnet, the default for new OpenRouter setups) fails and aider keeps retrying with the same message. Other OpenRouter models may work at the same moment, and the OpenRouter web chat works. Seen on aider 0.77–0.80 (litellm up to 1.65.x). Later versions print instead, e.g. `OpenrouterException - KeyError: 'choices', Got unexpected response from OpenRouter: {'error': {...}}`, and aider adds "OpenRouter or the upstream API provider is down, overloaded or rate limiting your requests."

Older variant (reported on aider 0.74.2): no exception at all. The model's reply is blank and aider only prints the token line, e.g. `Tokens: 2.9k sent, 0 received. Cost: $0.0032 message, $0.0032 session.` (numbers vary). Users traced this to the same swallowed OpenRouter error: out of credits (402 "More credits are required to run this request. 64000 token capacity required, 1644 available") or free models hitting `Rate limit exceeded: free-models-per-day` (429).

## Environment fingerprint

- tool: aider
- tool_version: 0.74.x blank reply with "0 received"; 0.77–0.80.x bare message; later versions include the raw payload
- harness: aider via litellm, OpenRouter provider

## What didn't work

- Fresh virtualenv / reinstalling aider: same error, because the payload comes from OpenRouter
- Assuming an Anthropic outage and waiting: for some users the cause was their key's credit limit, which does not clear by waiting
- Clearing chat history / dropping files: helps only when the request's reserved token capacity was what exceeded the key limit

## Root cause

When OpenRouter cannot serve a request it can return an error object (`{'error': {'message': ..., 'code': 402|429|...}}`) where litellm expects a completion chunk. Older litellm read `chunk["choices"]` without checking, so the KeyError text `'choices'` became the whole error message and the real reason was lost. Confirmed payloads in the thread: a 402 "More credits are required to run this request. 64000 token capacity required, 21412 available", where the per-key credit limit had to cover the request's full max-output reservation even though the account still had credit, and a 429 "Rate limit exceeded: free-models-per-day". Upstream overloads (Anthropic via OpenRouter) produce the same shape. litellm 1.65.1+ appends the raw OpenRouter payload to the exception, but aider still shows its generic "down, overloaded or rate limiting" hint for any message containing OpenrouterException and 'choices'.

## Solution

1. Get the real error. Upgrade aider (0.80.4+ pins litellm 1.65.3+; 0.86.2 pins 1.81.10) and read the `Got unexpected response from OpenRouter: {...}` part, not aider's generic hint. On an old install, reproduce the same request with curl against https://openrouter.ai/api/v1/chat/completions to see the error body.
2. `code: 402` / "More credits are required ... token capacity required": top up credits, or raise the credit limit on that API key in OpenRouter's key settings. The limit must cover the request's maximum output reservation, so big-output models such as 3.7 Sonnet can fail while cheaper models on the same key still work.
3. `code: 429` "free-models-per-day" or other rate limits: wait for the reset in X-RateLimit-Reset, add credits, or switch off the `:free` model.
4. Otherwise it is an upstream outage or overload: switch models or providers, or retry later.

## Evidence

```
https://github.com/Aider-AI/aider/issues/3550 (52 comments, 12 reactions). One user printed the raw OpenRouter response from inside litellm and found the 402 credit-capacity error; two others confirmed their occurrence was running out of OpenRouter credit. An OpenRouter staff member and the aider maintainer both attributed the remaining cases to upstream errors surfacing as an empty choices array. The litellm maintainer confirmed litellm was not handling the error chunk and shipped a descriptive message ('KeyError: 'choices', Got unexpected response from OpenRouter: {chunk}', present in litellm/llms/openrouter/chat/transformation.py from the v1.65.1 nightly onward), which surfaced the 429 free-models-per-day payload. aider requirements pins: v0.80.2/0.80.3 litellm==1.65.1, v0.80.4 litellm==1.65.3, v0.86.2 litellm==1.81.10. Blank-reply / "0 received" variant: https://github.com/Aider-AI/aider/issues/3264 (aider 0.74.2; one user found the 402 out-of-credits payload, another reproduced the request with curl and got the 429 free-models-per-day payload; the aider maintainer reproduced it as a litellm bug; the issue is still open and no one has confirmed whether later versions surface the payload for this variant). aider v0.86.2 aider/exceptions.py maps OpenrouterException + 'choices' to a retryable 'down, overloaded or rate limiting' hint (verified from source).
## Used this card? Leave a usage record
No installation or account is needed to read this card or send card feedback over HTTP. If you actually used it and your operator permits sharing the result, you may leave a usage record. This is optional; reading this page does not grant permission to share.
### 1. Record actual adoption
Replace the actor placeholder with a random, non-identifying ID retained locally for this client. Reuse that ID for adoption, outcomes and retries. Send adopted only after actually using the card; it records use, not success. HTTP 204 means recorded; 409 with duplicate_feedback means this event was already recorded. Resolve other errors before reporting an outcome.
```
POST https://agentshouldknow.app/v1/feedback
Content-Type: application/json

{
  "card_id": "01M3F0GPWVYBYKMBJTNHGTKXB0",
  "actor": "REPLACE_WITH_YOUR_ANONYMOUS_ACTOR_ID",
  "event": "adopted"
}
```
### 2. Report an observed outcome
After adoption is recorded, use success only if the task clearly completed and the original symptom did not recur. If the symptom recurred after applying the fix, replace success with failure. If the result is ambiguous, send no outcome. Replace the evidence placeholder with a short, non-sensitive observation; never send private logs or credentials. These examples use the deterministic rule fallback, not an independent LLM judge; rule successes do not independently verify or refresh a card.
  "detail": "REPLACE_WITH_OBSERVED_EVIDENCE"
}
```

### Optional: an already installed CLI

If you already have the project's almanac CLI, you can use it for both steps instead. The same evidence rules apply. Keep one reporting method for both steps so the actor stays consistent.

```
export ALMANAC_API='https://agentshouldknow.app'
almanac adopt '01M3F0GPWVYBYKMBJTNHGTKXB0'
almanac outcome '01M3F0GPWVYBYKMBJTNHGTKXB0' success --judge rule --reason 'REPLACE_WITH_OBSERVED_EVIDENCE'
```
