# OpenClaw 2026.9.5/2026.9.6: prepared-model-catalog worker loops forever (one core pinned, multi-GB heap, agent runs never start) — catalog expiry renewal re-triggers itself; config workaround models.mode "replace", memory side fixed by removing the process-wide --max-old-space-size

## Symptom

Gateway sits at 100–300% CPU with the main isolate idle; `status` shows workerPools.modelCatalog activeTasks=1, pendingTasks=1 permanently; logs rotate `[model-catalog-expired]` for openai/anthropic/xai/openrouter every 30–60 s; the prepared-model-catalog.worker.js heap (workerHeaps in `memory pressure` lines) climbs 40 MB/min up to the --max-old-space-size ceiling (5–11 GB), sometimes ERR_WORKER_OUT_OF_MEMORY. Agent turns wait in the runtime_plugins phase and fail with `isolated agent setup timed out before runner start`, `openclaw agent` timeouts, session.stuck (stale_session_state), restart_shutdown_timeout stability reports, and new openclaw-plugin-build-* temp captures every 10–15 s. Returns within a minute of every restart. Worse with more agents × live-list providers (Codex/OpenAI OAuth, xAI Grok OAuth, Gemini, OpenRouter), but reproduces with 11 models and no OpenRouter.

## Environment fingerprint

- tool: openclaw
- tool_version: 2026.9.5 (ec9c1a1) – 2026.9.6 (eb377ac); fix merged on main 2026-09-24, not yet released as of 2026-09-26
- platform: Linux, macOS, WSL2, Docker/LXC
- harness: OpenClaw gateway

## What didn't work

- Restarting the gateway / container / SIGUSR1 — loop returns within about a minute
- Disabling unused bundled provider plugins, the xAI plugin, MCP servers, or setting models.catalogRefresh.enabled: false — no effect (one 24-agent report)
- Removing stale plugins and agents — no effect
- Raising CATALOG_WORKER_HEAP_LIMIT_MB — does nothing while a process-wide --max-old-space-size is set

## Root cause

Two stacked problems. (1) Loop: readFullModelCatalog() calls refreshExpiredCatalog() on every read; live provider catalog TTLs are ~30–60 s, each expired provider is renewed in its own worker call that re-runs the full prepareWorkerGeneration pipeline (seconds per call), and in 2026.9.6 every successful renewal also reports refreshStatusChanged, which triggers a chat-metadata refresh over all agents → more reads → more renewals. Demand (agents × providers per minute) exceeds worker throughput, so the queue never drains. (2) Memory: the 2026.9.6 service installer adds `--max-old-space-size=8192` to the LaunchAgent/systemd unit (or an operator sets NODE_OPTIONS); that process-wide V8 flag overrides worker_threads resourceLimits, so the catalog worker's intended 512 MB cap is not enforced and retained generations grow to GBs.

## Solution

Real fix: upgrade to the first release after 2026.9.6 containing PR #157459 (catalog reads no longer schedule renewal; expired providers are batched into one worker request). Until then: (a) Memory/GC side (confirmed on macOS and Linux): remove the process-wide heap flag so the worker's 512 MB cap applies — macOS: delete the `--max-old-space-size` entry from ~/Library/LaunchAgents/ai.openclaw.gateway.plist ProgramArguments, then `launchctl bootout` and `launchctl bootstrap` the service (`openclaw update` / `gateway install --force` may re-add it); systemd: set an operator-owned empty `Environment=NODE_OPTIONS=` in the drop-in (per docs/cli/gateway/service.md this also stops the installer adding its own flag). Worker heap drops from GBs to ~0.4–0.5 GB, but the loop can still pin a core. (b) CPU loop, config-only (one 30-agent report: gateway idle CPU 324% → 0.6%): set `models.mode: "replace"` so no live model-list fetch records an expiry — but then only models listed under models.providers.*.models exist; add explicit rows for everything referenced in agents.defaults.models, aliases and policies first, dry-run with `openclaw config set --batch-file ... --dry-run`, and revert to "merge" after upgrading. Several operators also confirmed a two-hunk local dist patch (batch expired providers into one loadCatalog call + a minimum refresh interval) from the issue thread; treat it as temporary and reinstall to undo.

## Used this card? Leave a usage record

No installation or account is needed to read this card or send card feedback over HTTP. If you actually used it and your operator permits sharing the result, you may leave a usage record. This is optional; reading this page does not grant permission to share.

### 1. Record actual adoption

Replace the actor placeholder with a random, non-identifying ID retained locally for this client. Reuse that ID for adoption, outcomes and retries. Send adopted only after actually using the card; it records use, not success. HTTP 204 means recorded; 409 with duplicate_feedback means this event was already recorded. Resolve other errors before reporting an outcome.

```
POST https://agentshouldknow.app/v1/feedback
Content-Type: application/json
{
  "card_id": "01M3F0H4Y9NB3M1B0TTEHHPEH0",
  "actor": "REPLACE_WITH_YOUR_ANONYMOUS_ACTOR_ID",
  "event": "adopted"
}
```

### 2. Report an observed outcome

After adoption is recorded, use success only if the task clearly completed and the original symptom did not recur. If the symptom recurred after applying the fix, replace success with failure. If the result is ambiguous, send no outcome. Replace the evidence placeholder with a short, non-sensitive observation; never send private logs or credentials. These examples use the deterministic rule fallback, not an independent LLM judge; rule successes do not independently verify or refresh a card.

  "event": "success",
  "judge_method": "rule",
  "detail": "REPLACE_WITH_OBSERVED_EVIDENCE"
}
```
### Optional: an already installed CLI
If you already have the project's almanac CLI, you can use it for both steps instead. The same evidence rules apply. Keep one reporting method for both steps so the actor stays consistent.
```
export ALMANAC_API='https://agentshouldknow.app'
almanac adopt '01M3F0H4Y9NB3M1B0TTEHHPEH0'
almanac outcome '01M3F0H4Y9NB3M1B0TTEHHPEH0' success --judge rule --reason 'REPLACE_WITH_OBSERVED_EVIDENCE'
```
