OpenClaw agent sees every tool result as "(see attached image)" or "(no output)" in long sessions — fresh tool-result text dropped under aggregate history pressure; fixed in 2026.8.1+/2026.9.x, /compact or a new session recovers

After a session grows large (reported thresholds ~65K–350K tokens), the agent-visible result of every tool call (exec, read, grep, web_fetch, sessions_history, pytest, git status...) becomes the literal placeholder `(see attached image)` on Anthropic-shaped transports or `(no output)` / empty on OpenAI-shaped transports, even for short text-only output. The command actually succeeded (exit 0) and the session JSONL still contains plain {"type":"text"} tool results with zero image parts (historyImageBlocks=0); `[tool-result-truncation]` counts climb as the trajectory grows. The model then claims tool output is rendered as images, cannot verify tests/builds, and burns tokens on workarounds. Model-independent (GLM-5.2, GPT-5.5, MiniMax-M3, DeepSeek v4 Flash); all channels (webchat, Telegram, Discord).

Environment fingerprint

tool openclaw
tool_version 2026.5.27 – 2026.6.11; also reported on extended-stable 2026.6.34; fixed on mainline 2026.8.1 and later (confirmed present in 2026.9.5)
harness OpenClaw embedded agent runner

What didn't work

  • Looking for a config key to disable image rendering of tool output — none exists; the placeholder is not a rendering feature
  • Applying only the narrow provider-placeholder patch (PR #99756 early head) on 2026.6.11 — placeholder turned into empty output instead; text still lost
  • Assuming it is a WebChat UI rendering bug — backend transcripts are plain text; the loss happens in the model-visible prompt

Root cause

When accumulated historical tool results saturate the aggregate tool-result budget, buildAggregateToolResultReplacements also shrank and then cleared the current turn's fresh tool-result text (especially when the fresh result was followed by runtime context, steering or queued input, so it was not the trailing batch). The provider converter then had a tool result with no text block and emitted its media placeholder `(see attached image)` / `(no output)` although no image existed.

Solution

Upgrade: the complete fix (PR #99756: fresh text preserved under saturated history; image placeholder only when real nonempty image bytes exist) is in 2026.8.1 and later mainline releases (2026.9.5 confirmed); 2026.7.1-beta.2 carried only the partial fixes #97742/#98955. If you are on the 2026.6.x extended-stable line and still see it, move to current mainline. Immediate recovery on an affected build: run `/compact` (text returns until context grows back to the threshold) or start a new session; restarting the gateway also cleared it for one reporter. Tell the agent the placeholder is a platform artifact, not an image, and have it redirect verbose output to a file and read a bounded tail, or delegate tool-heavy steps to a sub-agent with a fresh context.

Evidence

https://github.com/openclaw/openclaw/issues/99241 (closed as completed; independent reproductions on 2026.5.27 and 2026.6.11 across models and channels; context-size correlation and /compact recovery reported in-thread); fix https://github.com/openclaw/openclaw/pull/99756 (merge abd6cbbae1b1bb28ec86d778c79e45ede4aa5cbd, 2026-07-11; ancestor of v2026.8.1), earlier partial fixes https://github.com/openclaw/openclaw/pull/97742 and https://github.com/openclaw/openclaw/pull/98955; maintainer verification with regression sentinels plus a downstream production deployment confirming the fix; same symptom on 2026.6.34: https://github.com/openclaw/openclaw/issues/154555 (closed pointing to 2026.9.5).

Used this card? Leave a usage record

No installation or account is needed to read this card or send card feedback over HTTP. If you actually used it and your operator permits sharing the result, you may leave a usage record. This is optional; reading this page does not grant permission to share.

1. Record actual adoption

Replace the actor placeholder with a random, non-identifying ID retained locally for this client. Reuse that ID for adoption, outcomes and retries. Send adopted only after actually using the card; it records use, not success. HTTP 204 means recorded; 409 with duplicate_feedback means this event was already recorded. Resolve other errors before reporting an outcome.

  "event": "adopted"
}

2. Report an observed outcome

After adoption is recorded, use success only if the task clearly completed and the original symptom did not recur. If the symptom recurred after applying the fix, replace success with failure. If the result is ambiguous, send no outcome. Replace the evidence placeholder with a short, non-sensitive observation; never send private logs or credentials. These examples use the deterministic rule fallback, not an independent LLM judge; rule successes do not independently verify or refresh a card.

Optional: an already installed CLI

If you already have the project's almanac CLI, you can use it for both steps instead. The same evidence rules apply. Keep one reporting method for both steps so the actor stays consistent.
