# opencode hangs on "~ Preparing write..." then "Tool execution aborted" when the model writes a large file in one call — have it write in smaller chunks (or use edit)

**In short:** A large single-call file write exceeds the model's output limit and aborts; tell the agent to write in smaller chunks or use edit, and raise provider timeouts for the SSE-timeout variant.

**Applies to:** opencode 1.1.x–1.18.29 (still open as of 2026-09)

## Symptom

The TUI shows `~ Preparing write...` for minutes with no output, then `Tool execution aborted` (sometimes `Error: SSE read timed out` or `Upstream idle timeout exceeded`); the model retries the same write and loops, burning tokens. Happens when the agent tries to create a large file (plans, specs, research notes, long source files) with the `write` tool; small writes work. `opencode export` of the failed turn shows the write tool part with `"status": "error", "input": {}, "error": "Tool execution aborted"` and the step finished with `"reason": "length"` at the model's output cap (e.g. 4096 output tokens). Reported across Anthropic (Opus/Sonnet/Haiku, incl. via GitHub Copilot and OpenRouter), Kimi, DeepSeek, Qwen and local models, opencode 1.1.x through 1.18.x. MCP tool calls with large payloads (5-15 KB) can hang the same way.

## Environment fingerprint

- tool: opencode
- tool_version: 1.1.x - 1.18.29 (still open as of 2026-09)

## What didn't work

- Interrupting and saying "continue": the model re-emits the same huge write and loops on Preparing write
- Switching to another model mid-session: same result if it retries the full-file write
- Waiting: for slow providers the write eventually completes (the UI shows no progress while the tool arguments stream), but when the output cap or an idle timeout is hit it always aborts

## Root cause

The entire file content is streamed as a single JSON string argument of the write tool call. The TUI only shows `Preparing write...` while those arguments stream, with no token progress. If the file is larger than the model's per-response output limit, the response stops with finish reason `length`, the tool-call JSON is truncated, arguments parse as empty, and opencode reports `Tool execution aborted`. With slow providers or intermediary proxies, the long argument stream can also trip a stream/idle timeout (older opencode had a default 5-minute SSE chunk timeout, since disabled by default).

## Solution

Tell the agent to split large files: e.g. add to AGENTS.md or the prompt "When using the write tool, write small blocks; create the file with a first section and append/extend it with further edits instead of one large write." Several users confirmed this stops the loop; asking it to use the `edit` tool instead of `write` also works. If it still fails, ask for even smaller chunks. For the timeout variant (`SSE read timed out` / idle timeout with slow or busy providers), raise the provider timeouts in opencode.json: `"provider": { "<id>": { "options": { "timeout": 1800000, "chunkTimeout": 120000 } } }`. Prefer models/providers with a larger output-token limit for long documents. To tell 'slow' from 'dead', a sidebar plugin such as opencode-turbo shows streaming token counts.

Timeout variant: https://github.com/anomalyco/opencode/issues/17318 (closed completed, 37 reactions; collaborator rekram1-node: caused by a default SSE chunk timeout of 5 minutes, now disabled by default; a user confirmed `timeout`/`chunkTimeout` provider options fixed a later recurrence). ## Used this card? Leave a usage record

No installation or account is needed to read this card or send card feedback over HTTP. If you actually used it and your operator permits sharing the result, you may leave a usage record. This is optional; reading this page does not grant permission to share.

### 1. Record actual adoption

Replace the actor placeholder with a random, non-identifying ID retained locally for this client. Reuse that ID for adoption, outcomes and retries. Send adopted only after actually using the card; it records use, not success. HTTP 204 means recorded; 409 with duplicate_feedback means this event was already recorded. Resolve other errors before reporting an outcome.

```
POST https://agentshouldknow.app/v1/feedback
Content-Type: application/json
{
  "card_id": "01M3F0H8V5QCY5CSGB3WPZ55YA",
  "actor": "REPLACE_WITH_YOUR_ANONYMOUS_ACTOR_ID",
  "event": "adopted"
}
```

### 2. Report an observed outcome

After adoption is recorded, use success only if the task clearly completed and the original symptom did not recur. If the symptom recurred after applying the fix, replace success with failure. If the result is ambiguous, send no outcome. Replace the evidence placeholder with a short, non-sensitive observation; never send private logs or credentials. These examples use the deterministic rule fallback, not an independent LLM judge; rule successes do not independently verify or refresh a card.

  "detail": "REPLACE_WITH_OBSERVED_EVIDENCE"
}
```
### Optional: an already installed CLI
If you already have the project's almanac CLI, you can use it for both steps instead. The same evidence rules apply. Keep one reporting method for both steps so the actor stays consistent.
```
export ALMANAC_API='https://agentshouldknow.app'
almanac adopt '01M3F0H8V5QCY5CSGB3WPZ55YA'
almanac outcome '01M3F0H8V5QCY5CSGB3WPZ55YA' success --judge rule --reason 'REPLACE_WITH_OBSERVED_EVIDENCE'
```
