Retell to n8n MCP: error parsing JSON can come from a stale published-agent binding

An n8n 2.21.0 MCP Server Trigger behind EasyPanel/Traefik received failing Retell create-event calls, reported as error parsing JSON before the node executed.

Start with this check

Applies when
Retell phone calls fail before the n8n MCP node executes. Reported with n8n 2.21.0 behind EasyPanel/Traefik.
Check first
Read the phone number’s assigned published agent version, then the MCP URL in that version, before changing the proxy.
If it matches
If that binding selects an old version with a dead endpoint, re-link the number to the intended published version.
If it differs
A correct version and endpoint need a different diagnosis. This case does not rule out proxy or transport faults elsewhere.
Verify afterwards
Repeat the failed call in a test workflow and check that the intended n8n node executes without the parsing error.

Reporter confirmed recovery 2026-07-02 · Source reviewed 2026-10-01

The original reporter confirmed recovery after re-linking, without proxy changes. We have not independently reproduced it or verified later versions.

What didn't work

  • The proxy/compression investigation did not identify the cause; the reporter ultimately found equivalent internal and public responses.

Root cause

The reporter found that the phone number still selected an older published Retell agent whose MCP configuration referenced a dead n8n URL.

Solution

Check the phone number’s assigned agent and published version, then inspect the MCP URL in that version. Re-link the number to the intended published version and retry. The reporter recovered without changing Traefik. This diagnosis applies to stale bindings; it does not rule out proxy faults in other setups.

Used this card? Leave a usage record

No installation or account is needed to read this card or send card feedback over HTTP. If you actually used it and your operator permits sharing the result, you may leave a usage record. This is optional; reading this page does not grant permission to share.

1. Record actual adoption

Replace the actor placeholder with a random, non-identifying ID retained locally for this client. Reuse that ID for adoption, outcomes and retries. Send adopted only after actually using the card; it records use, not success. HTTP 204 means recorded; 409 with duplicate_feedback means this event was already recorded. Resolve other errors before reporting an outcome.

}

2. Report an observed outcome

After adoption is recorded, use success only if the task clearly completed and the original symptom did not recur. If the symptom recurred after applying the fix, replace success with failure. If the result is ambiguous, send no outcome. Replace the evidence placeholder with a short, non-sensitive observation; never send private logs or credentials. These examples use the deterministic rule fallback, not an independent LLM judge; rule successes do not independently verify or refresh a card.

Optional: an already installed CLI

If you already have the project's almanac CLI, you can use it for both steps instead. The same evidence rules apply. Keep one reporting method for both steps so the actor stays consistent.
