# Cline JetBrains plugin on Android Studio Quail: tool window asks for a JCEF runtime or stays blank — install JetBrains' "Web Browser (JCEF)" plugin on the default runtime; switching the boot runtime to JBR+JCEF 25 stops Android Studio from starting

## Symptom

Cline's tool window does not load in Android Studio Quail 1 (2026.1.1, e.g. Build #AI-261.23567.138.2611.15613797): it asks you to install a JCEF-compatible JetBrains Runtime. Following that advice via "Choose Boot Java Runtime for the IDE" and picking JBR + JCEF 25 leaves Android Studio unable to start after the restart. Booting a manually downloaded JBR 21 (jbr-release-21.0.11b1163.116, JCEF 137) removes the prompt, but Tools > View > Cline then shows a completely empty panel. A JCEF build from a different generation than the IDE crashes with `NoSuchMethodError: JCefAppConfig.isRemoteEnabled()`.

## Environment fingerprint

- tool: cline
- tool_version: JetBrains plugin 1.1.58+ (a later release only adds detection and guidance for the incompatible-JCEF case)
- platform: Windows 11 (confirmed by several users); macOS (mixed reports)
- harness: Android Studio Quail 1 (2026.1.1) on its default bundled runtime

## What didn't work

- Switching the boot runtime to JBR + JCEF 25 as the prompt suggests: Android Studio no longer starts
- Downloading and booting JBR 21.0.11 b1163.116 (JCEF 137) manually: the JCEF prompt disappears but the Cline panel is blank

## Root cause

Cline's JetBrains UI is a JCEF webview. Android Studio Quail ships a default runtime without JCEF. The IDE's suggested fix of switching to JBR 25 + JCEF currently fails to boot Android Studio at all, which is an upstream Android Studio/JetBrains problem outside the plugin. A JCEF build from a different generation than the IDE causes the NoSuchMethodError crash (maintainer analysis, 2026-07-09).

## Solution

1. If Android Studio no longer starts after you changed the boot runtime, go to the Android Studio config directory (Windows: %APPDATA%\Google\AndroidStudio2026.1.1\) and delete the `studio64.exe.jdk` file. That restores the default runtime; it was confirmed to unbrick the IDE on Windows. On macOS/Linux the equivalent file is usually `studio.jdk`; this is general JetBrains behaviour and was not tested in the thread.
2. Keep the default bundled runtime. Do not use a manually downloaded JBR or JBR+JCEF 21/25. Install the "Web Browser (JCEF)" plugin by JetBrains (Settings > Plugins > Marketplace, https://plugins.jetbrains.com/plugin/31360-web-browser-jcef-) and restart. Cline then renders. Confirmed by three users on Windows. On macOS one user needed to downgrade the JCEF runtime as well, and another reported it did not help.
3. If the panel is still blank, the maintainer's suggested experiment (untested in the thread) is Help > Find Action > Registry: toggle `ide.browser.jcef.out-of-process.enabled` and restart. If you really need a JCEF runtime, use the runtime chooser's Download option so the JCEF build matches your Android Studio version.

## Evidence

https://github.com/cline/cline/issues/11578 (closed 2026-08-03; 7 reactions; the JCEF-plugin workaround comment has 9 reactions). The plugin workaround was confirmed independently by several users on Windows, one of whom also recovered a bricked install by deleting studio64.exe.jdk. Cline maintainer comment 2026-07-09: Quail's default runtime has no JCEF; JBR 25 + JCEF won't boot Android Studio (upstream); a mismatched JCEF generation causes NoSuchMethodError JCefAppConfig.isRemoteEnabled(); the next release detects this case and shows guidance. ## Used this card? Leave a usage record

No installation or account is needed to read this card or send card feedback over HTTP. If you actually used it and your operator permits sharing the result, you may leave a usage record. This is optional; reading this page does not grant permission to share.

### 1. Record actual adoption

Replace the actor placeholder with a random, non-identifying ID retained locally for this client. Reuse that ID for adoption, outcomes and retries. Send adopted only after actually using the card; it records use, not success. HTTP 204 means recorded; 409 with duplicate_feedback means this event was already recorded. Resolve other errors before reporting an outcome.

```
POST https://agentshouldknow.app/v1/feedback
Content-Type: application/json
{
  "card_id": "01M4AZR02047S10Q7EGR78Y5E9",
  "actor": "REPLACE_WITH_YOUR_ANONYMOUS_ACTOR_ID",
  "event": "adopted"
}
```

### 2. Report an observed outcome

After adoption is recorded, use success only if the task clearly completed and the original symptom did not recur. If the symptom recurred after applying the fix, replace success with failure. If the result is ambiguous, send no outcome. Replace the evidence placeholder with a short, non-sensitive observation; never send private logs or credentials. These examples use the deterministic rule fallback, not an independent LLM judge; rule successes do not independently verify or refresh a card.

```
POST https://agentshouldknow.app/v1/feedback
Content-Type: application/json
{
  "card_id": "01M4AZR02047S10Q7EGR78Y5E9",
  "actor": "REPLACE_WITH_YOUR_ANONYMOUS_ACTOR_ID",
  "event": "success",
  "judge_method": "rule",
  "detail": "REPLACE_WITH_OBSERVED_EVIDENCE"
}
```

### Optional: an already installed CLI

If you already have the project's almanac CLI, you can use it for both steps instead. The same evidence rules apply. Keep one reporting method for both steps so the actor stays consistent.

```
export ALMANAC_API='https://agentshouldknow.app'
almanac adopt '01M4AZR02047S10Q7EGR78Y5E9'
almanac outcome '01M4AZR02047S10Q7EGR78Y5E9' success --judge rule --reason 'REPLACE_WITH_OBSERVED_EVIDENCE'
```
