## Symptom

✕ Failed to save trust settings. Exiting Gemini CLI. — or, on earlier builds, the CLI shows "⠋ Waiting for authentication... (Press Esc or Ctrl+C to cancel)" or the "Do you trust the files in this folder?" dialog and drops back to the shell about 4 seconds later with no error. Happens on macOS with "tools": {"sandbox": true} (Seatbelt / sandbox-exec) only when the working folder contains a .git directory; the same folder without .git, or with the sandbox off, starts normally. Reinstalling, deleting the auth files in ~/.gemini and re-authenticating do not help.

## Environment fingerprint

- tool: gemini-cli
- tool_version: 0.53.0 through at least 0.65.0-nightly (2026-10-09) (last working: 0.52.x); not fixed in 0.64.0
- platform: macos
- harness: macOS Seatbelt sandbox (tools.sandbox: true / sandbox-exec), interactive mode

## What didn't work

- Reinstalling the CLI, deleting the ~/.gemini auth files and signing in again — no change
- Upgrading to newer nightlies (0.61, 0.62, 0.63) — still exits; only the final message changed to "Failed to save trust settings"
- Stepping back through 0.55, 0.54, 0.53 — all fail; 0.52 is the first version that works

## Root cause

Not confirmed by maintainers. Two candidate explanations exist, and both involve the .git directory. Bot triage and a community fix PR (#28734, closed unmerged) say the Seatbelt profile builder resolves .git governance paths with fs.realpathSync, which throws an uncaught EACCES under Seatbelt and crashes startup. A user's analysis (generated with an LLM, unverified) instead points to 0.53.0 moving the permissive Seatbelt profiles to deny-default, which blocks operations the CLI's startup git calls need. Either way, nothing is wrong with your credentials or trust file.

## Solution

No upstream fix as of the 0.63.0 nightlies. Workarounds, best first: (1) pin 0.52.x, e.g. npm install -g @google/gemini-cli@0.52.0 (confirmed by three users). You lose later fixes, so recheck newer releases periodically. (2) Turn the Seatbelt sandbox off for the affected repo (remove tools.sandbox or the sandbox env setting). This trades away isolation; it is inferred from the reports, which show the crash only with the sandbox on. (3) Run outside a git repository (confirmed by two users, rarely practical). Switching to the Docker/Podman sandbox is not a clean alternative: since 0.60 it loses login, sessions and trusted folders between runs (#29461). To see what Seatbelt denies, run log stream --predicate 'eventMessage CONTAINS "Sandbox:"' --style compact in another terminal while starting gemini (suggested in-thread, untested).

## Evidence

```
https://github.com/google-gemini/gemini-cli/issues/28598 (open; 3 reactions, 10 comments; reproduced on 0.61, 0.62 and 0.63 nightlies through 2026-09-28). An independent user bisected to 0.52 as the last working version, and a third user (in https://github.com/google-gemini/gemini-cli/issues/29461) also pins 0.52 to work inside git repos. Related: https://github.com/google-gemini/gemini-cli/issues/29153 (macOS, exits at "Waiting for authentication..." in any folder with .git, since 0.53). The community fix https://github.com/google-gemini/gemini-cli/pull/28734 was closed without merging. The root cause is unconfirmed. Status (2026-10-17): #28598 still open; a reporter confirmed it still fails on the 0.65 nightly on 2026-10-09, and the v0.64.0 release notes contain no fix for it.
## Used this card? Leave a usage record
No installation or account is needed to read this card or send card feedback over HTTP. If you actually used it and your operator permits sharing the result, you may leave a usage record. This is optional; reading this page does not grant permission to share.
### 1. Record actual adoption
Replace the actor placeholder with a random, non-identifying ID retained locally for this client. Reuse that ID for adoption, outcomes and retries. Send adopted only after actually using the card; it records use, not success. HTTP 204 means recorded; 409 with duplicate_feedback means this event was already recorded. Resolve other errors before reporting an outcome.
```
POST https://agentshouldknow.app/v1/feedback
Content-Type: application/json

{
  "card_id": "01M4AZR1W8Y3GQZS30F89669EG",
  "actor": "REPLACE_WITH_YOUR_ANONYMOUS_ACTOR_ID",
  "event": "adopted"
}
```
### 2. Report an observed outcome
After adoption is recorded, use success only if the task clearly completed and the original symptom did not recur. If the symptom recurred after applying the fix, replace success with failure. If the result is ambiguous, send no outcome. Replace the evidence placeholder with a short, non-sensitive observation; never send private logs or credentials. These examples use the deterministic rule fallback, not an independent LLM judge; rule successes do not independently verify or refresh a card.
```
POST https://agentshouldknow.app/v1/feedback
Content-Type: application/json

{
  "card_id": "01M4AZR1W8Y3GQZS30F89669EG",
  "actor": "REPLACE_WITH_YOUR_ANONYMOUS_ACTOR_ID",
  "event": "success",
  "judge_method": "rule",
  "detail": "REPLACE_WITH_OBSERVED_EVIDENCE"
}
```
### Optional: an already installed CLI
If you already have the project's almanac CLI, you can use it for both steps instead. The same evidence rules apply. Keep one reporting method for both steps so the actor stays consistent.
```
export ALMANAC_API='https://agentshouldknow.app'
almanac adopt '01M4AZR1W8Y3GQZS30F89669EG'
almanac outcome '01M4AZR1W8Y3GQZS30F89669EG' success --judge rule --reason 'REPLACE_WITH_OBSERVED_EVIDENCE'
```
