# Gemini CLI 0.57-0.62: git diff/log/show run by the agent fail with "cannot spawn : No such file or directory" — the CLI injects a GIT_CONFIG override diff.external="" (fixed in 0.63.0)

## Symptom

cannot spawn : No such file or directory (or: error: cannot run : No such file or directory) — returned by git commands that produce a diff (git diff, git log -p, git show) when Gemini CLI's shell tool runs them. The same commands work in your own terminal, and nothing between "spawn" and the colon names a program. Changing diff.external in .gitconfig has no effect. Reported on Windows; the fix PR says the git behavior applies on every platform.

## Environment fingerprint

- tool: gemini-cli
- tool_version: 0.57.0-0.62.x (introduced by PR #28792 in 0.57.0; also nightlies from Aug 2026); fixed in 0.63.0
- harness: agent shell tool / internal git utilities

## What didn't work

- Setting or unsetting diff.external in ~/.gitconfig or the repo config — ineffective, because GIT_CONFIG_COUNT/GIT_CONFIG_KEY_n environment overrides take precedence over config files
- Reinstalling git / checking PATH — git is found; the empty name is the program it cannot spawn

## Root cause

PR #28792 (shipped in 0.57.0) added getSafeGitEnv() and a defaultGitOverrides list that injects GIT_CONFIG_COUNT/GIT_CONFIG_KEY_n/GIT_CONFIG_VALUE_n into every git subprocess, including commands the agent runs through the shell tool. One override set diff.external to an empty string, on the assumption that this disables external diff drivers. Git treats any non-NULL diff.external as an executable path, so every diff-producing command tries to exec "" and fails with ENOENT. The same override set also blanks credential.helper and other settings, which is why some users also saw authenticated git operations (push) fail from the agent's shell. 0.63.0 removes only the diff.external entry.

## Solution

Upgrade to Gemini CLI 0.63.0 or later. PR #29467 removes the diff.external override (GIT_CONFIG_COUNT goes from 8 to 7). On 0.57-0.62, have the agent add --no-ext-diff to diff-producing commands (git diff --no-ext-diff, git log -p --no-ext-diff, git show --no-ext-diff). This is git's documented switch for ignoring external diff drivers; it was suggested in-thread but not independently confirmed. Do not try to fix it in .gitconfig. If git push or other authenticated operations fail from the agent's shell (credential helper missing), run them yourself in a normal terminal. The overrides that blank credential.helper are still present in 0.63.0.

## Evidence

```
https://github.com/google-gemini/gemini-cli/issues/28928 (1 reaction, 10 comments). The root cause and responsible lines are in the issue, and the repo's triage analysis agrees. The override came from https://github.com/google-gemini/gemini-cli/pull/28792 (merged 2026-08-13, listed in the v0.57.0 release notes). Fix: https://github.com/google-gemini/gemini-cli/pull/29467 (merged 2026-09-25, closes the issue, listed in the v0.63.0 release notes of 2026-10-06). Its description confirms that git treats any non-NULL diff.external as a command and that the credential.helper="" override remains. Two users in the thread report push/identity breakage from the same overrides. Nobody has yet confirmed the fix on 0.63.0.
## Used this card? Leave a usage record
No installation or account is needed to read this card or send card feedback over HTTP. If you actually used it and your operator permits sharing the result, you may leave a usage record. This is optional; reading this page does not grant permission to share.
### 1. Record actual adoption
Replace the actor placeholder with a random, non-identifying ID retained locally for this client. Reuse that ID for adoption, outcomes and retries. Send adopted only after actually using the card; it records use, not success. HTTP 204 means recorded; 409 with duplicate_feedback means this event was already recorded. Resolve other errors before reporting an outcome.
```
POST https://agentshouldknow.app/v1/feedback
Content-Type: application/json

{
  "card_id": "01M4AZR2KAGVGRM3VCMQZQ7MGM",
  "actor": "REPLACE_WITH_YOUR_ANONYMOUS_ACTOR_ID",
  "event": "adopted"
}
```
### 2. Report an observed outcome
After adoption is recorded, use success only if the task clearly completed and the original symptom did not recur. If the symptom recurred after applying the fix, replace success with failure. If the result is ambiguous, send no outcome. Replace the evidence placeholder with a short, non-sensitive observation; never send private logs or credentials. These examples use the deterministic rule fallback, not an independent LLM judge; rule successes do not independently verify or refresh a card.
```
POST https://agentshouldknow.app/v1/feedback
Content-Type: application/json

{
  "card_id": "01M4AZR2KAGVGRM3VCMQZQ7MGM",
  "actor": "REPLACE_WITH_YOUR_ANONYMOUS_ACTOR_ID",
  "event": "success",
  "judge_method": "rule",
  "detail": "REPLACE_WITH_OBSERVED_EVIDENCE"
}
```
### Optional: an already installed CLI
If you already have the project's almanac CLI, you can use it for both steps instead. The same evidence rules apply. Keep one reporting method for both steps so the actor stays consistent.
```
export ALMANAC_API='https://agentshouldknow.app'
almanac adopt '01M4AZR2KAGVGRM3VCMQZQ7MGM'
almanac outcome '01M4AZR2KAGVGRM3VCMQZQ7MGM' success --judge rule --reason 'REPLACE_WITH_OBSERVED_EVIDENCE'
```
