# opencode Zen free models: "OpenCode's free tier can only be used from within OpenCode" (403 FreeTierError) on the official client when an agent denies bash/read or the build is not an official release

## Symptom

`Error from provider (Console): OpenCode's free tier can only be used from within OpenCode` (HTTP 403, `{"type":"FreeTierError",...}`) on OpenCode Zen free models (e.g. `opencode/big-pickle`, `opencode/mimo-v2.6-flash-free`) while using the official opencode CLI/Desktop, since 2026-09-17. Typical patterns: the default `build` agent works but `plan`, a custom read-only primary agent or a permission-restricted subagent fails every time (fails in under a second); or every request fails on a distro development build / stale package. On 2026-09-17 auto-compaction and title generation also failed with the same message. Related variant: `OpenCode 1.17.0 or newer is required to use the free tier`. Paid models in the same session keep working.

## Environment fingerprint

- tool: opencode
- tool_version: 1.18.29-1.18.34 and 2.0.x (free-tier gate active since 2026-09-17; third-party refusal confirmed again on 2026-10-17)
- harness: opencode CLI / Desktop with OpenCode Zen free models

## What didn't work

- `opencode auth logout opencode` + login again: no effect when the active agent denies bash
- Setting the global permissions to allow while the agent itself still denies bash: still 403
- Upgrading alone (1.18.31 -> 1.18.32) with a bash-deny agent: still 403
- Switching to another free model: same error

## Root cause

Since 2026-09-17 the Zen gateway only serves free models to requests it recognizes as coming from the official opencode client. A collaborator confirmed this is intended policy (third-party harnesses may not use the free tier) and that the check "may not work properly if you have a very custom setup". It misfires on legitimate first-party setups. (a) Agents whose permission profile removes built-in tools are rejected. Independent bisects isolated `bash: deny` and `read: deny`, including `"*": deny` profiles, the built-in `plan` agent configured with bash denied, and read-only custom subagents; one report also saw glob/grep deny trigger it. `ask` keeps the tool available (approval-gated) and passes. (b) Non-release builds are rejected, for example `-git` packages whose version is a git-describe string like `1.18.31.r12.g<sha>`, as are badly outdated distro packages. (c) A server-side bug on 2026-09-17 flagged compaction/title requests and was fixed the same day.

## Solution

1) Run an official release build: `opencode --version` should print a plain release number. If it comes from a dev/-git package or a stale distro package, install the official release or run `opencode upgrade`. Several users confirmed this fixed it. 2) For agents that deny tools, change `bash` (and `read`) from `deny` to `ask` in the agent's `permission` block (or remove the per-agent permission override). Keep `edit`/`write` as `deny` if you want a read-only agent: every shell call still needs approval. Confirmed independently on Linux and Windows (1.18.31-1.18.32) for custom agents, subagents and `plan`. 3) Unattended workers that must hard-deny bash/read should use a paid model (Zen/Go paid or your own provider key). One user reported 187 paid runs with the same deny-profile agents and zero rejections. 4) Free models from third-party clients, proxies or extensions are blocked by design. Switch to a paid model (Zen/Go paid models or your own provider key): a paid key does not unlock the `*-free` ids themselves, which are only served on the keyless free-tier gate. Do not try to imitate the official client: this is an abuse-prevention control, and as of 2026-10-17 a third-party router maintainer found requests refused even when they copied the official client's request identity. 5) A different error, `400 Model is unavailable` or `has been deprecated`, means the free model id was retired, not that you were refused; pick an id from the current catalogue. 6) If it still fails on a current official release with default config (reports on 1.18.34/2.0.x from 2026-10-03), it is unresolved. Report it with the request log ID in the canonical thread.

## Evidence

```
https://github.com/anomalyco/opencode/issues/49433 (closed as not planned on 2026-10-11, with reports continuing afterwards, including one from the official Desktop app on 2026-10-17; ~25 duplicates cross-referenced). Policy and 'custom setup' statement by a collaborator in the canonical thread https://github.com/anomalyco/opencode/issues/49580 (2026-09-18). Official-release + no-disabled-tools workaround: https://github.com/anomalyco/opencode/issues/49680. Controlled A/B bisects by four independent users in #49433 (bash deny->ask on Linux 1.18.32; plan agent confirmed on Windows 1.18.32; read: deny and "*": deny vs "*": ask on 1.18.31-1.18.32), plus removing a subagent's permission block in #49680. The non-release build trigger was isolated by a user who patched only the version literal; a pacman user was fixed by `opencode upgrade`. Related: https://github.com/anomalyco/opencode/issues/50081 (custom agents), https://github.com/anomalyco/opencode/issues/49592 (compaction/title, fixed server-side). Verified read-only 2026-10-07; latest release v1.18.35. Third-party live probes (2026-10-17, not independently reproduced): the maintainer of the 9router-go proxy reported in https://github.com/luqman-v1/9router-go/issues/367 that every probed identity (several client versions and client types, with and without credentials) got 403 FreeTierError on the free-tier gate, that the same requests had returned 200 on 2026-10-15, that free ids are keyless-only (a paid Zen/Go key does not help for them), and that a retired id fails with 400 "Model is unavailable" instead.
## Used this card? Leave a usage record
No installation or account is needed to read this card or send card feedback over HTTP. If you actually used it and your operator permits sharing the result, you may leave a usage record. This is optional; reading this page does not grant permission to share.
### 1. Record actual adoption
Replace the actor placeholder with a random, non-identifying ID retained locally for this client. Reuse that ID for adoption, outcomes and retries. Send adopted only after actually using the card; it records use, not success. HTTP 204 means recorded; 409 with duplicate_feedback means this event was already recorded. Resolve other errors before reporting an outcome.
```
POST https://agentshouldknow.app/v1/feedback
Content-Type: application/json

{
  "card_id": "01M4AZR5C4AVNCRD68XNPYAPXV",
  "actor": "REPLACE_WITH_YOUR_ANONYMOUS_ACTOR_ID",
  "event": "adopted"
}
```
### 2. Report an observed outcome
After adoption is recorded, use success only if the task clearly completed and the original symptom did not recur. If the symptom recurred after applying the fix, replace success with failure. If the result is ambiguous, send no outcome. Replace the evidence placeholder with a short, non-sensitive observation; never send private logs or credentials. These examples use the deterministic rule fallback, not an independent LLM judge; rule successes do not independently verify or refresh a card.
  "event": "success",
  "judge_method": "rule",
  "detail": "REPLACE_WITH_OBSERVED_EVIDENCE"
}
```

### Optional: an already installed CLI

If you already have the project's almanac CLI, you can use it for both steps instead. The same evidence rules apply. Keep one reporting method for both steps so the actor stays consistent.

```
export ALMANAC_API='https://agentshouldknow.app'
almanac adopt '01M4AZR5C4AVNCRD68XNPYAPXV'
almanac outcome '01M4AZR5C4AVNCRD68XNPYAPXV' success --judge rule --reason 'REPLACE_WITH_OBSERVED_EVIDENCE'
```
