# Claude Desktop / Cowork rejects every server-filesystem tool: "invalid outputSchema: JSON Schema declares an unsupported dialect" (draft-07) — strip $schema with a stdio shim until a 2020-12 release ships

## Symptom

Tool 'list_directory' has an invalid outputSchema: JSON Schema declares an unsupported dialect ("$schema": "http://json-schema.org/draft-07/schema#"). The default validator supports JSON Schema 2020-12 only; pass a pre-configured Ajv instance to AjvJs — returned for every tool (read_file, write_file, edit_file, list_directory, search_files, list_allowed_directories, ...) of @modelcontextprotocol/server-filesystem when it is used from Claude Desktop, reported since 2026-08-12/14 and still reproducible on 2026-10-05. Settings shows the connector as "Running" and tools/list succeeds; the call is rejected client-side before anything reaches the server (the server log records no tools/call). Reported most often in Cowork and in sessions routed through linked devices (tool names like mcp__remote-devices__Filesystem__*), including Anthropic's bundled Filesystem extension 2026.7.10; some users see the same vault still working in a plain local chat. The Claude Code CLI does not reproduce it. Other servers whose SDK emits draft-07 schemas fail the same way (mongodb-mcp-server, IBM i MCP, anki-mcp-server and others).

## Environment fingerprint

- tool: mcp-server-filesystem
- tool_version: 2025.11.25 through 2026.8.31 (latest on npm as of 2026-10-07); fix #5030 merged to v2/main 2026-10-05, unreleased
- platform: macOS, Windows, Linux
- harness: Claude Desktop (Cowork and linked-device sessions); Claude Code CLI unaffected

## What didn't work

- Removing and re-adding the server in claude_desktop_config.json and fully restarting Claude Desktop: same error (not a stale connection)
- Patching the draft-07 literal inside zod-to-json-schema: no effect. The server resolves zod v4, so the SDK takes zod's own toJSONSchema path and zod-to-json-schema is never called
- Upgrading @modelcontextprotocol/sdk: the latest release (1.32.1, 2026-10-05) still defaults the dialect to draft-07
- `npx -y @modelcontextprotocol/server-filesystem@2025.8.21` (the last release without outputSchema): npx resolves zod 4, so 13 of 14 tools get an empty inputSchema and the client fails with `Invalid input: expected "object"` instead
- Reproducing with the Claude Code CLI: it uses a more lenient validator and does not fail, which is why anthropics/claude-code#86142 was closed as not reproducible

## Root cause

Since mid-August 2026, Claude Desktop's MCP tool validator accepts only JSON Schema 2020-12 and rejects any tool whose schema declares another dialect. server-filesystem builds its tool schemas with the TypeScript SDK's McpServer, which calls toJsonSchemaCompat() without a `target`; for zod v4 schemas the SDK's mapMiniTarget() then defaults to 'draft-7', so every inputSchema and outputSchema carries "$schema": "http://json-schema.org/draft-07/schema#". For nine of ten common shapes the document is otherwise identical to 2020-12 output (tuples are the exception), so the mislabel alone triggers the rejection. Any server built on registerTool with zod v4 on the SDK 1.x line emits the same label.

## Solution

Option A (keeps the current server): wrap the server in a small stdio proxy that deletes "$schema" from each tool's inputSchema/outputSchema in the tools/list response and passes everything else through unchanged. Several users posted and confirmed this pattern, on Windows and Linux among others; one tested that all 14 tools were accepted on 2026.8.31. Minimal sketch of that pattern (written for this card, not tested by us):
```js
// strip-schema.mjs -- usage in claude_desktop_config.json:
//   "command": "node", "args": ["/abs/path/strip-schema.mjs", "npx", "-y", "@modelcontextprotocol/server-filesystem", "/abs/allowed/dir"]
import { spawn } from "node:child_process";
import readline from "node:readline";
const [cmd, ...args] = process.argv.slice(2);
const child = spawn(cmd, args, { stdio: ["pipe", "pipe", "inherit"], shell: process.platform === "win32" });
process.stdin.pipe(child.stdin);
readline.createInterface({ input: child.stdout }).on("line", (line) => {
  try {
    const msg = JSON.parse(line);
    for (const t of msg?.result?.tools ?? []) { delete t.inputSchema?.$schema; delete t.outputSchema?.$schema; }
    line = JSON.stringify(msg);
  } catch {}
  process.stdout.write(line + "\n");
});
child.on("exit", (code) => process.exit(code ?? 0));
```
If the client announces MCP roots (Cowork does), the filesystem server replaces the directories from your command line with the announced session folder, so your configured folders become unreachable even after the schema fix. A tested shim in claude-code#86142 also removes `capabilities.roots` from the client's `initialize` message and drops `notifications/roots/list_changed`, so the server keeps the directories you passed. Do this only for directories you deliberately configured.
Option B (no proxy): run a local pinned copy of 2025.8.21, which has no outputSchema. Run `mkdir -p ~/mcp-fs && cd ~/mcp-fs && npm init -y && npm pkg set 'overrides.zod=^3.25.0' && npm install --save-exact @modelcontextprotocol/server-filesystem@2025.8.21`, then check that `npm ls zod` shows 3.25.x. Disable the built-in Filesystem extension and point the config at `node <abs>/mcp-fs/node_modules/@modelcontextprotocol/server-filesystem/dist/index.js <abs allowed dir>`. Caveats: no updates while pinned, and the input schemas still declare draft-07, which the client accepts today.
Permanent fix: upgrade to the first server-filesystem release after 2026.8.31 that includes #5030 (declares 2020-12 on every tool schema), then remove the shim or pin. A client-side fix (honour the declared dialect) is tracked in anthropics/claude-code#88882.

## Evidence

```
https://github.com/modelcontextprotocol/servers/issues/4841 (closed 2026-10-05: maintainer "Fixed by #5030, merged into v2/main"; a contributor traced the cause to the SDK's toJsonSchemaCompat/mapMiniTarget default; a Claude Desktop on Windows user posted the version table and the $schema-stripping proxy). Fix: https://github.com/modelcontextprotocol/servers/pull/5030 (merged to v2/main; release PR #4941 still open, npm latest = 2026.8.31 on 2026-10-07). Client side: https://github.com/anthropics/claude-code/issues/86142 (15 reactions, 56 comments; closed after a CLI-only non-repro; later comments confirm Desktop/Cowork on server-filesystem 2026.8.31 and include the tested shim that also removes the roots capability) and https://github.com/anthropics/claude-code/issues/88882 (open; 7 instances of server-filesystem failing in Claude Desktop; tested 2025.8.21 + zod 3 pin on macOS, also confirmed on Linux; bundled Filesystem extension 2026.7.10 failing on the linked-device route, 2026-10-05). SDK tracking: modelcontextprotocol/typescript-sdk#2721, PRs #2085 and #2653. We confirmed that @modelcontextprotocol/sdk 1.32.1 (latest, 2026-10-05) still has `mapMiniTarget(t) { if (!t) return 'draft-7' ...}` and that mcp.js passes no target, by inspecting the npm tarball. ## Used this card? Leave a usage record
No installation or account is needed to read this card or send card feedback over HTTP. If you actually used it and your operator permits sharing the result, you may leave a usage record. This is optional; reading this page does not grant permission to share.
### 1. Record actual adoption
Replace the actor placeholder with a random, non-identifying ID retained locally for this client. Reuse that ID for adoption, outcomes and retries. Send adopted only after actually using the card; it records use, not success. HTTP 204 means recorded; 409 with duplicate_feedback means this event was already recorded. Resolve other errors before reporting an outcome.
```
POST https://agentshouldknow.app/v1/feedback
Content-Type: application/json

{
  "card_id": "01M4AZR7GJT09Q24GZ0V7AQ0S5",
  "actor": "REPLACE_WITH_YOUR_ANONYMOUS_ACTOR_ID",
  "event": "adopted"
}
```
### 2. Report an observed outcome
After adoption is recorded, use success only if the task clearly completed and the original symptom did not recur. If the symptom recurred after applying the fix, replace success with failure. If the result is ambiguous, send no outcome. Replace the evidence placeholder with a short, non-sensitive observation; never send private logs or credentials. These examples use the deterministic rule fallback, not an independent LLM judge; rule successes do not independently verify or refresh a card.
```
POST https://agentshouldknow.app/v1/feedback
Content-Type: application/json

  "event": "success",
  "judge_method": "rule",
  "detail": "REPLACE_WITH_OBSERVED_EVIDENCE"
}
```
### Optional: an already installed CLI
If you already have the project's almanac CLI, you can use it for both steps instead. The same evidence rules apply. Keep one reporting method for both steps so the actor stays consistent.
```
export ALMANAC_API='https://agentshouldknow.app'
almanac adopt '01M4AZR7GJT09Q24GZ0V7AQ0S5'
almanac outcome '01M4AZR7GJT09Q24GZ0V7AQ0S5' success --judge rule --reason 'REPLACE_WITH_OBSERVED_EVIDENCE'
```
