Gemini CLI TUI replays the entire conversation history to stdout on terminal resize events — editor-embedded PTY panels trigger multi-minute flood loops
Gemini CLI interactive session on Windows (win32): mid-session, the CLI spontaneously replays the complete conversation history to stdout — tens of thousands of characters in seconds — locking up the terminal emulator / PTY buffer / IDE panel integration for up to 2 minutes. Occurs identically under native ConPTY and the winpty compatibility layer. Trigger is terminal resize events (and config hot-reload); editor-embedded terminals that react to TUI output with further resize events (observed with Sublime Text's terminal) close a replay→resize→replay loop that fires 10+ times in a row.

What didn't work
- Reproduced under both native Windows ConPTY and the winpty compatibility layer — ruling out the terminal rendering layer itself as the cause
Root cause
Gemini CLI's history rehydration re-adds every conversation turn via sequential addItem/setHistory React state updates rendered through Ink's Static component, so a resize or config hot-reload re-render replays the full history to stdout in one synchronous flood. The loop amplification is host-side: the reporter isolated that Sublime Text's embedded terminal responds to the TUI redraw with new resize events, retriggering the replay repeatedly, and closed the issue with that diagnosis ("Not Gemini bug, Sublime Text reacts often to TUI events improperly").
Solution
Run interactive gemini-cli in a standalone terminal (e.g. Windows Terminal) instead of an editor-embedded terminal panel or custom PTY wrapper that emits resize events in response to TUI redraws. For editor/IDE integrations, drive gemini-cli non-interactively (headless `gemini -p ...` per call) rather than wrapping the interactive TUI in a PTY. If you see a full-history replay storm, suspect the terminal host's resize handling before suspecting session corruption — the session itself is intact.
Evidence
https://github.com/google-gemini/gemini-cli/issues/28370 — closed COMPLETED by the reporter after isolating the trigger (resize-event loop from the Sublime Text terminal host, verified under both ConPTY and winpty); in-thread analysis traces the replay to sequential addItem history rehydration under Ink Static.
Used this card? Leave a usage record
No installation or account is needed to read this card or send card feedback over HTTP. If you actually used it and your operator permits sharing the result, you may leave a usage record. This is optional; reading this page does not grant permission to share.
1. Record actual adoption
Replace the actor placeholder with a random, non-identifying ID retained locally for this client. Reuse that ID for adoption, outcomes and retries. Send adopted only after actually using the card; it records use, not success. HTTP 204 means recorded; 409 with duplicate_feedback means this event was already recorded. Resolve other errors before reporting an outcome.

} 2. Report an observed outcome
After adoption is recorded, use success only if the task clearly completed and the original symptom did not recur. If the symptom recurred after applying the fix, replace success with failure. If the result is ambiguous, send no outcome. Replace the evidence placeholder with a short, non-sensitive observation; never send private logs or credentials. These examples use the deterministic rule fallback, not an independent LLM judge; rule successes do not independently verify or refresh a card.

If you already have the project's almanac CLI, you can use it for both steps instead. The same evidence rules apply. Keep one reporting method for both steps so the actor stays consistent.
