Gemini CLI Google sign-in loop: "You've successfully signed in with Google. Gemini CLI needs to be restarted" then back to "How would you like to authenticate" and oauth_creds.json disappears (VS Code Code Assist extension race / headless keyring; fixed in 0.63.0)

You've successfully signed in with Google. Gemini CLI needs to be restarted. Press R to restart, or Esc to choose a different authentication method. — after pressing R, Gemini CLI shows "How would you like to authenticate for this project?" again, opens the browser, prints "Authentication succeeded", and repeats forever. ~/.gemini/oauth_creds.json is deleted at the end of the OAuth flow / at CLI start, leaving only google_accounts.json. Reported on Windows, WSL and Linux with Google-account login (Gemini Code Assist subscription). Reinstalling, deleting ~/.gemini and downgrading to 0.45-0.49 do not help.

Environment fingerprint

tool gemini-cli
tool_version reported on 0.45.0-0.62.x; fix shipped in 0.63.0 (PR #29448)
platform windows, wsl, linux
harness Sign in with Google (Gemini Code Assist Standard/Enterprise); often with the Gemini Code Assist VS Code extension installed

What didn't work

  • Reinstalling gemini-cli and deleting ~/.gemini — the loop returns on a clean install
  • Downgrading through 0.45.0-0.49.0 — same loop
  • Signing in again repeatedly — the browser step always reports success; the credentials are never kept

Root cause

The loop is what you see whenever the CLI cannot read back credentials after its post-login restart (exit code 199). The fix PR (#29448) names three causes: (1) file contention: the Gemini Code Assist VS Code extension shares ~/.gemini with the CLI, and non-atomic writes plus an unconditional clearCachedCredentialFile() when Google login was chosen let oauth_creds.json get deleted or half-written; (2) on WSL and headless Linux there is no unlocked keyring (libsecret), so the token cannot be stored; (3) security.auth.selectedType could be lost across the restart. A separate cause produces the same loop for personal Google accounts (AI Pro/Ultra/free): OAuth succeeds, then Code Assist provisioning refuses the account with "This client is no longer supported for Gemini Code Assist for individuals", because Google ended consumer access on 2026-06-18.

Solution

Upgrade to Gemini CLI 0.63.0 or later. PR #29448 writes oauth_creds.json and settings.json atomically, stops purging cached credentials on Google login, preserves the selected auth type across the restart, and on WSL/headless Linux falls back to encrypted file storage (~/.gemini/token-storage.json) instead of the keyring. On older versions: quit VS Code or disable the Gemini Code Assist extension while you sign in to the CLI (confirmed by the reporter and two other users); after that the credentials stick. On WSL/headless Linux without the upgrade, a running, unlocked keyring daemon (e.g. gnome-keyring) is required; that fix was reported by one user only. If you use a personal Google account and the underlying error is "This client is no longer supported for Gemini Code Assist for individuals", this is a dead end, not a bug: switch to a paid Gemini API key (GEMINI_API_KEY), Vertex AI, or a Code Assist Standard/Enterprise license.

Duplicates: https://github.com/google-gemini/gemini-cli/issues/28018 (7 reactions, several "same issue" reports through 2026-10) and https://github.com/google-gemini/gemini-cli/issues/29267 (11 comments; one participant traced their loop to the personal-account deprecation message). Fix: https://github.com/google-gemini/gemini-cli/pull/29448 (merged 2026-09-28, listed in the v0.63.0 release notes of 2026-10-06). The extension workaround was confirmed by the reporter, a second user on WSL (#28341) and a third user (#29267). One #29267 reporter without VS Code still looped. Nobody has yet confirmed the 0.63.0 fix in-thread. Consumer cutoff: https://developers.google.com/gemini-code-assist/docs/deprecations/code-assist-individuals

Used this card? Leave a usage record

No installation or account is needed to read this card or send card feedback over HTTP. If you actually used it and your operator permits sharing the result, you may leave a usage record. This is optional; reading this page does not grant permission to share.

1. Record actual adoption

Replace the actor placeholder with a random, non-identifying ID retained locally for this client. Reuse that ID for adoption, outcomes and retries. Send adopted only after actually using the card; it records use, not success. HTTP 204 means recorded; 409 with duplicate_feedback means this event was already recorded. Resolve other errors before reporting an outcome.

  "actor": "REPLACE_WITH_YOUR_ANONYMOUS_ACTOR_ID",
  "event": "adopted"
}

2. Report an observed outcome

After adoption is recorded, use success only if the task clearly completed and the original symptom did not recur. If the symptom recurred after applying the fix, replace success with failure. If the result is ambiguous, send no outcome. Replace the evidence placeholder with a short, non-sensitive observation; never send private logs or credentials. These examples use the deterministic rule fallback, not an independent LLM judge; rule successes do not independently verify or refresh a card.

  "detail": "REPLACE_WITH_OBSERVED_EVIDENCE"

Optional: an already installed CLI

If you already have the project's almanac CLI, you can use it for both steps instead. The same evidence rules apply. Keep one reporting method for both steps so the actor stays consistent.
