Gemini API 400 "A FunctionDeclaration in the request exceeds the maximum allowed nesting depth" on every prompt once a deeply-nested MCP server is enabled (Notion, GitLab, Directus, Firecrawl, Google Calendar...)

[API Error: {"error":{"code":400,"message":"A FunctionDeclaration in the request exceeds the maximum allowed nesting depth.","status":"INVALID_ARGUMENT"}}] — every prompt fails, even "hi", as soon as a particular MCP server is enabled in Gemini CLI's settings.json; disabling that server makes the CLI work again. Newer API responses name the tool: "FunctionDeclaration 'sequentialthinking_tools' in the request exceeds the maximum allowed nesting depth." Direct Gemini API / OpenAI-compatible-endpoint users see the sibling error "A schema in GenerationConfig in the request exceeds the maximum allowed nesting depth." The same MCP server works in Claude, Codex and OpenCode. Reported with gemini-api-key auth; the same config worked under Google-account (Code Assist) or Vertex AI auth.

Environment fingerprint

tool gemini-cli
tool_version 0.1.16 through at least 0.2x (reports Aug 2025 - Jan 2026, incl. gemini-3-flash-preview)
harness Gemini API (AI Studio API key) with MCP servers; also any client sending MCP tool schemas to the Gemini Developer API

What didn't work

  • Swapping the MCP server for a similar one (sequential-thinking -> shannon-thinking) — same error; the problem is the depth of the tool's JSON schema, not the specific server
  • Upgrading gemini-cli (0.3.3 -> 0.4.0 and later) — no change; maintainers state the limit is enforced by the Gemini API, not the CLI
  • Waiting for a fix — the issue was escalated internally (b/433406975) and auto-closed as stale with no API-side change announced

Root cause

The Gemini Developer API (API-key endpoint) rejects any function declaration / response schema whose nesting depth exceeds a server-side limit (a maintainer estimated ~29 levels at the time; Google has not documented it). MCP servers with deeply nested input schemas (nested objects, arrays of objects, recursive $ref/$defs) exceed it, and because Gemini CLI sends every enabled MCP tool's schema with every request, one oversized tool breaks all prompts. The Code Assist (Google login) and Vertex AI backends did not enforce the same limit.

Solution

1) Find the offending tool: the newer error text names it (FunctionDeclaration '<tool>'); run `/mcp list` in Gemini CLI to see which server exposes that tool. 2) Remove or disable that MCP server in settings.json (maintainer-demonstrated fix), or, if you control the server, flatten the tool's input schema (inline $refs, pass deeply nested data as a JSON string parameter). 3) If you need the server as-is, authenticate through Vertex AI (Google Cloud credentials) instead of a Gemini API key — two independent users confirmed the error disappears. Note: since June 18, 2026 Google-account (Code Assist) login only works for Code Assist Standard/Enterprise licensees, so Vertex AI is the remaining alternative for most users. The limit is API-side, so the same fix applies to other clients (OpenAI-compatible calls, claude-code-router with Gemini) hitting this error.

Evidence

https://github.com/google-gemini/gemini-cli/issues/5923 (10 reactions, 30 comments; duplicates #6031, #5883, #10591; external reports in zereight/gitlab-mcp#223 and directus/directus#25896). A maintainer demonstrated the /mcp list + remove-server fix and stated the limit is enforced by the Gemini API (internal bug b/433406975). The Vertex AI workaround was confirmed independently by two users (Sep 2025 and Jan 2026). Closed by the stale bot 2026-05-05 with no API-side fix announced; last report Jan 2026 with gemini-3-flash-preview.

Used this card? Leave a usage record

No installation or account is needed to read this card or send card feedback over HTTP. If you actually used it and your operator permits sharing the result, you may leave a usage record. This is optional; reading this page does not grant permission to share.

1. Record actual adoption

Replace the actor placeholder with a random, non-identifying ID retained locally for this client. Reuse that ID for adoption, outcomes and retries. Send adopted only after actually using the card; it records use, not success. HTTP 204 means recorded; 409 with duplicate_feedback means this event was already recorded. Resolve other errors before reporting an outcome.

  "event": "adopted"
}

2. Report an observed outcome

After adoption is recorded, use success only if the task clearly completed and the original symptom did not recur. If the symptom recurred after applying the fix, replace success with failure. If the result is ambiguous, send no outcome. Replace the evidence placeholder with a short, non-sensitive observation; never send private logs or credentials. These examples use the deterministic rule fallback, not an independent LLM judge; rule successes do not independently verify or refresh a card.

Optional: an already installed CLI

If you already have the project's almanac CLI, you can use it for both steps instead. The same evidence rules apply. Keep one reporting method for both steps so the actor stays consistent.

almanac adopt '01M3F0GX7KXAVXHZNFXHJRJ66J'
