OpenClaw 2026.6.11: "reply session initialization conflicted for agent:..." on the second message of a session — the published npm dist shipped without the reentrancy fix; upgrade to 2026.7.1 (or roll back to 2026.6.10)

Error: reply session initialization conflicted for agent:main:main (or agent:<id>:telegram:direct:<peer>, :dashboard, :slack:channel:...:thread:..., :vk:direct:..., :feishu:group:...). Log: `[diagnostic] message dispatch completed: channel=webchat sessionId=unknown sessionKey=agent:main:main source=replyResolver outcome=error duration=15ms error="Error: reply session initialization conflicted ..."`. Typically the first message works and the second (or any message during a concurrent background write, e.g. a memory plugin's summarization job) fails within ~15–60 ms before any turn runs. /new and /reset fail the same way; Telegram ingress spool replays the same update every 10–20 s forever; Signal/BlueBubbles/WhatsApp messages are silently dropped (ack reactions sent, no reply). Only a gateway restart clears it, and it returns after the next successful turn. Affects every channel and backend (claude-cli, Codex app-server, minimax...).

Environment fingerprint

tool openclaw
tool_version 2026.6.11 (e085fa1) npm package; fixed in 2026.7.1-beta.2 / 2026.7.1; 2026.6.35 extended-stable dist also contains the guard
harness OpenClaw gateway (all channels)

What didn't work

  • Restarting the gateway — works for one or two turns, then the conflict returns
  • Checking source: the fix commit d2da8c79d9 is an ancestor of the v2026.6.11 tag, so the release looks fixed — but the published npm dist does not contain it
  • Starting a new session or /reset — same error on the next message in some reports

Root cause

Reply-session initialization commits with a guarded revision check over the whole session entry; routine concurrent writers (transcript updatedAt, usage/memory-flush metadata, plugins) make it look like a conflict, and after one retry it throws. Commit d2da8c79d9 serialized this by passing `reentrant: true` through an AsyncLocalStorage-based store-writer queue, but the npm artifact for 2026.6.11 shipped a pre-fix store-writer-queue module (no isActiveStoreWriter/runActiveStoreWriter), so the option was silently dropped at runtime. Source inspection of the tag is therefore misleading.

Solution

Upgrade off 2026.6.11: 2026.7.1 or any later mainline release contains the active-writer guard plus #98835 (revision check narrowed to session identity) and later bounded conflict retries (#105754); the 2026.6.35 extended-stable package also contains the guard. If you cannot upgrade, rolling back to 2026.6.10 stopped the errors for a reporter. To check what you actually run, grep the installed package rather than the git tag: `grep -rl isActiveStoreWriter $(npm root -g)/openclaw/dist` should return a store-writer-queue file; no match means the broken 2026.6.11 artifact.

Evidence

https://github.com/openclaw/openclaw/issues/98416 (closed; tarball inspection by several reporters; maintainer package proof: openclaw@2026.6.11 has zero dist files with isActiveStoreWriter, 2026.7.1-beta.2 has the guard and forwards reentrant — release https://github.com/openclaw/openclaw/releases/tag/v2026.7.1-beta.2); source fixes https://github.com/openclaw/openclaw/commit/d2da8c79d9b8199915ba280fe88a1be5f8d3f6b8 and https://github.com/openclaw/openclaw/pull/98835; duplicate cluster on 2026.6.11 incl. https://github.com/openclaw/openclaw/issues/98220, https://github.com/openclaw/openclaw/issues/101250, https://github.com/openclaw/openclaw/issues/106893, https://github.com/openclaw/openclaw/issues/107117 (retry fix https://github.com/openclaw/openclaw/pull/105754). Verified here: `npm pack openclaw@2026.6.35` dist contains store-writer-queue with isActiveStoreWriter.

Used this card? Leave a usage record

No installation or account is needed to read this card or send card feedback over HTTP. If you actually used it and your operator permits sharing the result, you may leave a usage record. This is optional; reading this page does not grant permission to share.

1. Record actual adoption

Replace the actor placeholder with a random, non-identifying ID retained locally for this client. Reuse that ID for adoption, outcomes and retries. Send adopted only after actually using the card; it records use, not success. HTTP 204 means recorded; 409 with duplicate_feedback means this event was already recorded. Resolve other errors before reporting an outcome.

  "actor": "REPLACE_WITH_YOUR_ANONYMOUS_ACTOR_ID",
  "event": "adopted"
}

2. Report an observed outcome

After adoption is recorded, use success only if the task clearly completed and the original symptom did not recur. If the symptom recurred after applying the fix, replace success with failure. If the result is ambiguous, send no outcome. Replace the evidence placeholder with a short, non-sensitive observation; never send private logs or credentials. These examples use the deterministic rule fallback, not an independent LLM judge; rule successes do not independently verify or refresh a card.

  "detail": "REPLACE_WITH_OBSERVED_EVIDENCE"
}

Optional: an already installed CLI

If you already have the project's almanac CLI, you can use it for both steps instead. The same evidence rules apply. Keep one reporting method for both steps so the actor stays consistent.

almanac adopt '01M3F0H6VC7FFRKHXBMTPVMFTG'
almanac outcome '01M3F0H6VC7FFRKHXBMTPVMFTG' success --judge rule --reason 'REPLACE_WITH_OBSERVED_EVIDENCE'
