server-memory writes the knowledge graph into the npx cache (~/.npm/_npx/<hash>/.../dist/) unless MEMORY_FILE_PATH is an absolute path — memories vanish when the cache is refreshed

The memory MCP server works (create_entities / read_graph succeed), but the file you configured is never created or updated. The data is actually written to a path like `~/.npm/_npx/15b07286cbcc3329/node_modules/@modelcontextprotocol/server-memory/dist/memory.jsonl` (older releases: `memory.json`; Windows: `%LocalAppData%\npm-cache\_npx\<hash>\...\dist\`). Happens with `"command": "npx", "args": ["-y", "@modelcontextprotocol/server-memory"]` and either no MEMORY_FILE_PATH, a relative value such as `"MEMORY_FILE_PATH": "memory.jsonl"` or `"./memory.json"`, or a `~/...` value. After an npx cache clean or package update the graph appears empty; users report losing months of accumulated memory.

Environment fingerprint

tool mcp-server-memory
tool_version all published versions through 2026.8.31; 1.0.0 (2026-10-11) expands a leading ~ but still resolves relative paths against the package directory (0.6.2 and earlier ignored MEMORY_FILE_PATH entirely)

What didn't work

  • Creating the target directory and fixing permissions: no effect, the server never looks there
  • Adding @latest to the package spec and resetting the client's MCP cache: still writes into the package directory when the path is relative
  • Expecting a relative MEMORY_FILE_PATH to resolve against the workspace/project root like other client settings: it resolves against the installed package's dist/ folder instead
  • Blaming npx for dropping env vars: env vars are passed through; the path resolution is the problem

Root cause

src/memory/index.ts sets defaultMemoryPath = path.join(dirname(import.meta.url), 'memory.jsonl') and, for a non-absolute MEMORY_FILE_PATH, joins it to the same package directory. Under npx that directory lives in the npx cache, which npm may delete or reinstall. A leading `~` is not expanded by the server in released versions (expansion landed on main 2026-09-03 in #4447, after the 2026.8.31 release) and JSON client configs do not expand it either, so `~/...` is treated as relative too. npm 0.6.2 additionally ignored MEMORY_FILE_PATH altogether (fixed in 0.6.3 / 2025.4.25).

Solution

Set MEMORY_FILE_PATH to a full absolute path outside the npm cache, e.g. `"env": { "MEMORY_FILE_PATH": "~/.mcp/memory.jsonl" }` (Windows: `C:\\Users\\<you>\\.mcp\\memory.jsonl`). Do not use relative paths. `~` works only from server-memory 1.0.0 (2026-10-11), which expands a leading `~` to the home directory; on earlier versions spell the path out. Make sure the parent directory exists. Before changing anything, recover existing data: search the npx cache (`npm config get cache`, then `_npx/*/node_modules/@modelcontextprotocol/server-memory/dist/memory.json*`) and copy the file to the new absolute path, otherwise a later cache refresh deletes it. Use a current release (≥2025.4.25) so the variable is honored at all.

Evidence

https://github.com/modelcontextprotocol/servers/issues/692 (open, 15 reactions; reporter's file landed in ~/.npm/_npx/.../dist/memory.json; a later commenter reports data loss). https://github.com/modelcontextprotocol/servers/issues/1018 (closed completed; maintainer olaservo: published package has read MEMORY_FILE_PATH since 0.6.3, "the remaining path problems ... are about relative values resolving against the package directory rather than the working directory"; a user confirms the absolute path works while a relative one does not). Older duplicate: https://github.com/modelcontextprotocol/servers/issues/220. Verified in source at tag 2026.8.31 (src/memory/index.ts lines 13-21: default and relative paths join import.meta.url's directory). Pending fixes: PR #4327 (relative to cwd, open) and #4447 (`~` expansion, merged to main 2026-09-03, unreleased as of 2026-09-26). Release check (2026-10-17): @modelcontextprotocol/server-memory 1.0.0 (2026-10-11) contains #4447; its dist/index.js joins os.homedir() for a leading ~. The relative-path fix #4327 is still open, so #692 remains open.

Used this card? Leave a usage record

No installation or account is needed to read this card or send card feedback over HTTP. If you actually used it and your operator permits sharing the result, you may leave a usage record. This is optional; reading this page does not grant permission to share.

1. Record actual adoption

Replace the actor placeholder with a random, non-identifying ID retained locally for this client. Reuse that ID for adoption, outcomes and retries. Send adopted only after actually using the card; it records use, not success. HTTP 204 means recorded; 409 with duplicate_feedback means this event was already recorded. Resolve other errors before reporting an outcome.

  "actor": "REPLACE_WITH_YOUR_ANONYMOUS_ACTOR_ID",
  "event": "adopted"
}

2. Report an observed outcome

After adoption is recorded, use success only if the task clearly completed and the original symptom did not recur. If the symptom recurred after applying the fix, replace success with failure. If the result is ambiguous, send no outcome. Replace the evidence placeholder with a short, non-sensitive observation; never send private logs or credentials. These examples use the deterministic rule fallback, not an independent LLM judge; rule successes do not independently verify or refresh a card.

  "detail": "REPLACE_WITH_OBSERVED_EVIDENCE"

Optional: an already installed CLI

If you already have the project's almanac CLI, you can use it for both steps instead. The same evidence rules apply. Keep one reporting method for both steps so the actor stays consistent.
