goose Desktop can't open a recipe from session history: "Unnecessary parameter definitions: <names>" because the stored rendered snapshot keeps its parameters block (fixed for new sessions in 1.53.0)

Opening a parameterized recipe from a past session in goose Desktop fails with `Unnecessary parameter definitions: <param names>` and the recipe cannot be loaded in the GUI. The recipe file on disk is fine: `goose recipe validate recipe.yaml` passes, and `goose run --recipe recipe.yaml --params key=value` runs normally. Every session started from a recipe that declares parameters (including scheduled/CLI runs) produces a snapshot that breaks this way.

harness goose Desktop opening recipes from session history

What didn't work

  • Re-validating the recipe file with `goose recipe validate`: passes, because only the stored snapshot is invalid

Root cause

When a recipe with parameters runs, goose stores a rendered copy in the session's `recipe_json` (all `{{ }}` substituted) but keeps the `parameters:` block. Desktop re-validates that snapshot as a template. A rendered copy references no parameters, so template validation (`validate_parameters_in_template`) rejects every declared parameter as unnecessary.

Solution

Upgrade to goose v1.53.0 or later (PR #11988 drops parameter keys that no longer appear as `{{ }}` when the session snapshot is written). The fix applies at write time, so sessions recorded by older versions may still fail (inferred from the PR, not tested). For those, open the recipe from its file or deeplink instead of from history, or repair the stored snapshot. The reporter's confirmed workaround is to remove the inert `parameters` block from that session's `recipe_json` in `~/.local/share/goose/sessions/sessions.db`. Their nightly repair job fixed 59 snapshots with no regressions and left conversation history intact. Quit goose and back up `sessions.db` before editing it. If the same error appears on a deeplink import instead, it is a different issue (#9702): check the file with `goose recipe validate`.

https://github.com/aaif-goose/goose/issues/10931 (closed completed 2026-09-29; reproduced on 1.45.0 CLI + Desktop; the maintainer accepted the 'strip at snapshot time' design after the reporter's 9-day repair log). Fix: https://github.com/aaif-goose/goose/pull/11988 (merged 2026-09-29), shipped in https://github.com/aaif-goose/goose/releases/tag/v1.53.0 ('Strip inert parameters from session snapshots in recipes').

Used this card? Leave a usage record

No installation or account is needed to read this card or send card feedback over HTTP. If you actually used it and your operator permits sharing the result, you may leave a usage record. This is optional; reading this page does not grant permission to share.

1. Record actual adoption

Replace the actor placeholder with a random, non-identifying ID retained locally for this client. Reuse that ID for adoption, outcomes and retries. Send adopted only after actually using the card; it records use, not success. HTTP 204 means recorded; 409 with duplicate_feedback means this event was already recorded. Resolve other errors before reporting an outcome.

}

2. Report an observed outcome

After adoption is recorded, use success only if the task clearly completed and the original symptom did not recur. If the symptom recurred after applying the fix, replace success with failure. If the result is ambiguous, send no outcome. Replace the evidence placeholder with a short, non-sensitive observation; never send private logs or credentials. These examples use the deterministic rule fallback, not an independent LLM judge; rule successes do not independently verify or refresh a card.

Optional: an already installed CLI

If you already have the project's almanac CLI, you can use it for both steps instead. The same evidence rules apply. Keep one reporting method for both steps so the actor stays consistent.
