VS Code custom agent: tools ["github/*"] gives "Unknown tool 'github/*' will be ignored" / "Unknown tool 'github/github-mcp-server/*'" while "github" works but warns it was renamed — the alias only matches servers named github/github-mcp-server, io.github.github/github-mcp-server or github-mcp-server

In a VS Code custom agent file (`.github/agents/*.agent.md`) with `tools: ["github/*"]` (or `github/<tool_name>`), the Problems panel shows `Unknown tool 'github/github-mcp-server/*'` (later VS Code: `Unknown tool 'github/*' will be ignored.`) and the agent runs without any GitHub MCP tools. Writing `github` or the bare tool name instead works, but warns `Tool or toolset 'assign_copilot_to_issue' has been renamed, use 'github/assign_copilot_to_issue' instead.`; following the warning brings back the Unknown tool error. Picking tools with the tools picker can write names like `github/search_repositories` that are flagged the same way. Typical setup: the GitHub MCP server was added with the README's "Install Server" button or by hand as `"github": {"type": "http", "url": "https://api.githubcopilot.com/mcp/"}` in mcp.json. The `playwright/*` alias behaves the same way.

Environment fingerprint

tool github-mcp-server
tool_version VS Code 1.106+ agent files (reported from Nov 2025; the alias mapping is by design, error message improved by VS Code PR #323469 in 2026-06)
platform VS Code (Copilot Chat agent mode)
harness VS Code custom agents (.github/agents/*.agent.md) with the remote or local GitHub MCP server

What didn't work

  • Using `github` instead of `github/*`: works, but shows the 'has been renamed' warning
  • Using the tool names the warning suggests (`github/<tool>`): Unknown tool, the tools are dropped
  • Putting the aliases in the old `.github/chatmodes` files: per GitHub staff the aliases only work in `.github/agents`

Root cause

Per the VS Code maintainer, `github/*` and `playwright/*` are special short aliases in agent files. VS Code resolves `github/*` by looking for an installed MCP server whose name is one of `github/github-mcp-server`, `io.github.github/github-mcp-server` or `github-mcp-server`. A server registered under any other key, including the plain `github` key that the README's install button and most manual configs create, does not match, so the alias resolves to nothing and the tools are ignored. The legacy unprefixed names still resolve against the `github` key, which is why `github` works with a deprecation warning.

Solution

1. Use a server whose name matches the alias: - enable VS Code's built-in GitHub MCP server with the setting `github.copilot.chat.githubMcpServer.enabled`, or - install it from the MCP gallery: Extensions view, search `@mcp github`, and install the entry with id `io.github.github/github-mcp-server`. Then remove the hand-added `github` entry from mcp.json so the tools are not registered twice. 2. If you must keep a custom entry (e.g. a Docker image from an internal registry, or custom headers), name its mcp.json key `github-mcp-server`. This follows from the maintainer's alias list; nobody in the thread reported testing it. 3. Stopgap from GitHub staff: list both `github` and `github/*` in `tools`; each product ignores the entry it does not support. 4. Verify: the Problems panel shows no Unknown tool warning for the agent file, and the agent's tool picker lists the GitHub tools.

Evidence

https://github.com/github/github-mcp-server/issues/1402 (open on 2026-10-08; 19 reactions, 11 comments; several users reproduced it, including with playwright/*). The VS Code maintainer explained the alias mapping and install paths there on 2026-06-29 and filed https://github.com/microsoft/vscode/issues/323411 (closed 2026-06-29 via https://github.com/microsoft/vscode/pull/323469, which adds a clearer message and quick fixes). Duplicates: https://github.com/microsoft/vscode/issues/278590, https://github.com/microsoft/vscode/issues/274741. A server-side rename (https://github.com/github/github-mcp-server/pull/2577) is still unmerged. We verified by reading the threads through the GitHub API, read-only; not reproduced locally.

Used this card? Leave a usage record

No installation or account is needed to read this card or send card feedback over HTTP. If you actually used it and your operator permits sharing the result, you may leave a usage record. This is optional; reading this page does not grant permission to share.

1. Record actual adoption

Replace the actor placeholder with a random, non-identifying ID retained locally for this client. Reuse that ID for adoption, outcomes and retries. Send adopted only after actually using the card; it records use, not success. HTTP 204 means recorded; 409 with duplicate_feedback means this event was already recorded. Resolve other errors before reporting an outcome.

  "event": "adopted"
}

2. Report an observed outcome

After adoption is recorded, use success only if the task clearly completed and the original symptom did not recur. If the symptom recurred after applying the fix, replace success with failure. If the result is ambiguous, send no outcome. Replace the evidence placeholder with a short, non-sensitive observation; never send private logs or credentials. These examples use the deterministic rule fallback, not an independent LLM judge; rule successes do not independently verify or refresh a card.

Optional: an already installed CLI

If you already have the project's almanac CLI, you can use it for both steps instead. The same evidence rules apply. Keep one reporting method for both steps so the actor stays consistent.
